Royal Philips and WellSpan Health have announced a seven-year strategic alliance covering advanced imaging technology, joint research, and AI-driven care delivery across 12 hospitals in Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland.
The agreement establishes Philips as WellSpan’s preferred vendor across all major imaging modalities, CT, MR, digital X-ray, ultrasound, and image-guided therapy, with a unified framework for equipment lifecycle management, service, training, and technology upgrades across all sites.
| Modality | Principle | Primary clinical use | Notable AI players |
|---|---|---|---|
| CT (Computed Tomography) | X-ray acquisition from multiple angles reconstructed into cross-sectional images | Trauma, oncology, vascular imaging, emergency diagnosis | Viz.ai, Aidoc, Subtle Medical, RapidAI |
| MR (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) | Radio waves and magnetic fields to generate soft tissue contrast without radiation | Neurology, musculoskeletal, oncology, cardiac imaging | Subtle Medical, Enlitic, Perspectum, HeartVista |
| Digital X-ray | Single-pass ionizing radiation captured on a digital detector | Chest, bone fractures, routine screening | Qure.ai, Lunit, Annalise.ai, Oxipit, AZmed, Gleamer |
| Ultrasound | High-frequency sound waves reflected by tissues to produce real-time images | Obstetrics, abdominal organs, cardiac, vascular, point-of-care | Caption Health (GE), Butterfly Network, EchoNous, Sonio |
| Image-guided therapy | Real-time imaging (fluoroscopy, CT, MR) used to guide minimally invasive procedures | Interventional radiology, cardiac catheterization, neurovascular intervention | Microbot Medical, Navix, Proprio, Activ Surgical |
Beyond the commercial component, the alliance includes a research and co-development agreement described as the first of its kind between Philips and a U.S. community health system. The two organizations will jointly validate AI and digital tools targeting workflow efficiency and workforce time recapture, with WellSpan acting as both a test environment and a co-creator of future Philips products.
